Our Mission

We aim to bring together our northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan communities to explore an array of exciting flavors and options in the rapidly expanding world of plant-based eating. By sharing new vegan products and services and providing speakers, we promote a plant-based lifestyle for health, compassion and environmental conservation. We encourage everyone to make healthy food choices for their own lives and to support our local vegan-friendly businesses and organizations.

What is VegFest?

VegFest is an annual food festival held in cities around the world to promote plant-based eating, vegan lifestyles, compassion for animals and conservation of the environment. Vegfests typically include speakers on healthy eating, animal protection and environmental sustainability; cooking demos with free samples; vendors for food, cosmetics, clothing and other goods that are produced without animal ingredients; and often entertainment such as live music or movies.

EVERYONE is welcome and invited to veg fests! Visitors discover products, make connections with local vendors, watch plant-based cooking demonstrations, attend lectures and receive resources if they wish to learn how a plant-based diet could work for them.

Why Michiana?

Michiana VegFest began its journey several years ago, before its inaugural event on March 25, 2018. A community event organized in March 2016 by the Beacon Health System and titled "Taste of Health" attracted many participants. Local groups have also been organizing smaller events for many years. This VegFest is the culmination of a long journey to meet our community's interests and to bring further education on the benefits of a plant-based diet and lifestyle.

Until 2018, our area appeared to be quite empty on a map listing VegFests in the U.S. This is now changing! Michiana has become increasingly vegan-friendly with supportive restaurants and businesses in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Goshen, Michigan City, Fort Wayne, Niles, Berrien Springs, Three Oaks, Stevensville, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, and Kalamazoo, to name only a few in Indiana and Michigan.

Michiana enjoys two active Meetup groups, VegMichiana Meetup in the South Bend area (323 members) and Kalamazoo Meetup (1101 members); two thriving Facebook groups, VegMichiana (654 members) and Vegans of Michiana (343 members). Both VegMichiana Meetup and VegMichiana Facebook groups compose one PlantPure pod, benefiting from the invaluable support of PlantPure Communities.

Please keep coming back as we update our website for VegFest 2020! And don't forget to contact us with any questions or comments.

What is the Deeper Purpose of VegFests?

Eating a healthier plant-based diet can prevent and even reverse major chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes.

Animal agriculture impacts the environment in many ways: it destroys natural animal and plant habitats through deforestation; it makes excessive use of water; the methane gas released by cows and other farmed animals contributes massively to global warming; runoff waters from fertilizers cause pollution and dead zones in the oceans.

VegFests promote the many benefits of a plant-based diet by highlighting delicious vegan foods through educational lectures, cooking demonstrations and displays by vegan-friendly businesses and nonprofit organizations.
