Where is Michiana?

The term “Michiana” stands for southwestern Michigan and northwestern Indiana. It was created by combining “Michigan” with “Indiana.” South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Goshen, Michigan City, Fort Wayne, Niles, Berrien Springs, Three Oaks, Stevensville, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, and Kalamazoo are just a handful of the many cities in this region that have vegan-friendly establishments.

South Bend residents are well supported by three different social media groups, including Veg Michiana Facebook group (700+ members), Veg Michiana Meetup group (320+ members), and Vegan Michiana Facebook community (350+ members). The national organization, PlantPure Communities, supports our locally managed groups. Vegan Kalamazoo is a Facebook group from Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a considerable following (2.5 K members).

Michiana’s veg organizations host a wide range of events:

  • Socials where like-minded individuals who are vegan, vegetarian, or veg-curious may meet, enjoy good food, and trade recipes and information
  • Outings to restaurants
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Film evenings at a local home with free vegan snacks.

If you are vegan, vegetarian, or interested in making the shift, you may look forward to resources in Michiana as well as an active, lively, and supportive plant-based community.
